Lonehill furore over MTN towers settles

LONEHILL - The furore surrounding the erection of MTN towers in Lonehill is now under control thanks to a Joint Standards Working Group which is now supervising the erection of the telecommunication poles.

“A series of meetings and workshops have taken place since November and the result is the group is defining and agreeing on four critical guiding principles for the community of Lonehill,” read part of a statement which was released by the group.

The group, which is made of five Lonehill residents, five MTN executives, the Lonehill Residents’ Association’s chairman and local ward councillors, has come up with four guiding principles comprising proximity, safety and security, the impact on community members and aesthetics.

This followed after MTN erected 13 telecommunication poles in Lonehill after winning a City Power tender to increase digital connectivity in the area.

The residents of Lonehill, however, raised concerns about the project which led to a meeting last November between stakeholders. The Joint Standards Working Group was established during this meeting.

The group said there had been site visits to all the telecommunication poles in Lonehill.

“The working group will apply each of the agreed principles to the various sites for a consistent and speedy resolution to the community’s concerns,” continued the statement.

Lonehill residents are in the process of commissioning surveys to assess and gain an in-depth understanding of all the peripheral issues relating to connectivity in the suburb.
