DA paints Joburg blue
JOBURG – Members and supporters of the Democratic Alliance (DA) painted the Johannesburg CBD blue as party leaders, including the leader, Mmusi Maimane, led thousands on a march for jobs through the city.
The march started at Westgate Transport Hub on the corner of Anderson and Margaret Mcingana streets after the party bussed in supporters from all Gauteng regions.
Speaking at the march, Jack Bloom, the caucus leader of the DA Gauteng Provincial Legislature, said they were marching in solidarity with the millions of South Africans who were bearing the brunt of a leaderless economy in which unemployment was growing day by day.
“We are marching with the millions of our nation crying for accountable leadership,” he said.
“We are in solidarity with those who feel lost and were forgotten by the government. Because of their state of unemployment, they have lost dignity.”
He added that the government needed to recognise and exploit available opportunities to create jobs for the benefit of all South Africans, not just a few individuals.
The party’s national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said ever since President Jacob Zuma came to power, millions of South Africans have lost their jobs and the DA was marching in solidarity with those people who have lost hope.
“We want government to make sure that they create jobs and conducive conditions for job creation,” said Van Damme.
“Government needs to develop infrastructure, improve education, and improve Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment for the benefit of all South Africans, not only for the ANC top brass. And stop corruption.”
