Operation Fiyela sweeps up 10 Diepsloot suspects

DIEPSLOOT - A total of 10 suspects were arrested over the weekend of 16 and 17 January in Diepsloot during Operation Fiyela (which means sweeping clean).

The operation designed to rid Diepsloot of crime was led by the new Honeydew Police Cluster Commander, Major General Girly Mbele.

Mbele urged police officers during the operation to not lose sight of the importance of crime prevention.

“It is cheaper than reacting to crime,” said Mbele.

This operation saw local police, the Saps Mounted Unit, TRT and Base Camp personnel combine to execute over 500 stop-and-searches at roadblocks, liquor outlets and pedestrians walking on the streets.

“The police were rewarded with the arrest of 10 suspects for offences ranging from the illegal sale of liquor, possession of narcotics, malicious damage to property and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” said Honeydew Police Cluster spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.

Also swept into incarceration during the operation was a 62-year-old man shortly after he allegedly abused his 10-year-old daughter.

It is said the victim fled to a neighbour’s shack, allegedly to escape her father’s beatings, but the suspect arrived soon thereafter and reportedly grabbed the victim and dragged her out of the shack. He allegedly continued to assault her before being arrested by police officers. The man will be charged with child abuse and assault. The suspect can only be identified after he appears in Randburg Magistrates’ Court this week.
