Driveway robbery in Sunninghill

SUNNINGHILL - Three to four suspects were involved in a driveway robbery on 12 January in Sunninghill Park.

According to Linda Gildenhuys, chairperson of Sunninghill Community Security, a resident was robbed at gunpoint in front of her complex on Eldoret Road, along with the complex’s security guards, at 4pm.

She added that the suspects who were in a white Jaguar followed the victim, however, it is unknown where the victim was followed from, despite efforts from security officers to retrace the suspects’ route.

“We managed to find the suspects’ vehicle on our cameras on the corner of Tana and Naivasha roads and also on the cameras leading out of Sunninghill on the corner of Maxwell and Peitier roads. The footage has now been handed over to police and findings have proven that the suspects’ registration number was false,” Gildenhuys said.

The suspects managed to rob the victim of her jewellery and handbag which contained a substantial amount of money.

“The victim and security guards are fine, but are traumatised by the ordeal,” she said.

Gildenhuys advised community members to follow these tips in order to avoid being involved in such a situation:

  •  Be aware of vehicles behind you when you are driving
  •  Make sure you are not being followed
  •  Be alert and aware of your surroundings
  •  Be aware of expensive high-powered vehicles which do not normally frequent the area
  •  Avoid withdrawing large amounts of money and carrying it with you
  •  Avoid wearing expensive jewellery which might attract the wrong attention.

“It has been reported that a vehicle like the suspected one has been involved in similar crimes in both the Douglasdale and Sandton policing districts,” the chairperson concluded.

Sandton Police Station is yet to confirm the robbery.
