Pupil excels in matric

KYALAMI - Beaulieu College's Luyanda Mdanda is proof that all one needs to succeed is determination.

The 17-year-old matric pupil from the school in Kyalami achieved three distinctions. However, Mdanda hasn’t always been a high achiever. He remarked that he had always been an average pupil. At primary school he averaged about 50 percent for his subjects, however, when he started in Grade 8 at Beaulieu he decided to change his attitude towards school.

“I decided that for me to become the man that I want to be, things had to change. I want to be a man that inspires millions and mentors others into being the best they can be. I want to be able to mentor students,” he said. In addition to his three distinctions Mdanda received B symbols for his other subjects.

To become the hard working person that he now is, he decided that instead of sitting at the back of the class he would move up to the front. He also started making friends with some of the best achievers in the school. Extramural activities were also important to him as he felt that there was a need to have a balanced lifestyle. He is now a promising golf player affiliated to the Central Gauteng Gold Union and has represented the country in Malaysia and Scotland.

Mdanda has plans to study computer engineering at the University of California. “I chose the university because it has some of the best facilities in the world. I want to learn from their advanced technology and then come back and revolutionise South Africa,” he said, beaming.
