The City of Joburg brings the house down on NYE

JOBURG - The City of Joburg's preparations for New Year's Eve, with the help of Joburg Carnival, paid off and proved to be a sparkling success.

The festivities on 31 December last year included four music stages, some of the world’s greatest and diverse musical acts, three venues, a fireworks display, dance celebrations and one goal – a sensational toast to the New Year.

Joburg’s rich diversity of cultures was again put on display when the annual Joburg carnival wended its way through the streets of Joburg in a kaleidoscope of colours and sounds. The carnival, an annual event which celebrates the City’s reputation as a melting pot of cultural traditions, set off at 12pm from Hillbrow and allowed all residents to take part.

The procession moved from Hillbrow through the streets of Braamfontein, across the Mandela Bridge and into Newtown. At Mary Fitzgerald Square, various artists entertained the crowd and joined the party, which went into the early hours of the new year.

The concert was hosted at three different venues including Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown Park and Soweto Theatre. Each concert hosted different DJs and live bands of various genres.

Live performances on the night included Lira Tortured Soul (USA), Mafikizolo, Black Coffee, Kwesta, Femi Koya (Nigeria), The Muffinz, The General (Zimbabwe), Arthur Mafokate and Busiswa. A star-studded DJ line-up comprising DJ Cleo, DJ Zinhle, DJ Shimza, Twins on Deck and Victor Masondo kept the crowds dancing.
