GP to test one million people in three months

JOBURG - The Gauteng Department of Health is on course to meet its target of testing one million people in the province by the end of December this year.

The department revealed that, to date, they have tested over 700 000 people for HIV and Aids since October this year. The provincial health department spokesman, Steve Mabona, said this drive was part of a build-up to World Aids Day festivities, which will be commemorated on the 1st December in the City of Tshwane.

Mabona said, “Under the theme, Working together to end Aids in Gauteng by 2030, provincial commemoration festivities will run for a period of five days at the Tshwane Events Centre from the 30th November to the 4th December.”

The festivities will include an expo by Gauteng provincial government departments and various stakeholders. Discussions will be focused on providing information about all aspects of HIV and Aids, including the latest scientific information and perspectives. The festivities will be geared towards the realisation of the UNAids 2020 vision of ensuring that by the year 2020, 90 percent of people living with HIV know their HIV status, 90 percent of those diagnosed with HIV receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 90 percent of all those receiving antiretroviral therapy reach viral suppression.

World Aids Day was celebrated globally on 1 December and put the spotlight on HIV and Aids while uniting communities in the fight against the pandemic.
