Be vigilant this festive season

The last two months of the year generally see a notable increase in follow-home robberies, house robberies and business robberies. Don’t let it happen to you.

The increase in these particular types of crimes is partly due to the increase in activity at shopping centres, residents going on holidays or working outside normal hours, and dwindling numbers of employees present at work respectively.

Shopping centres and parking lots make targets vulnerable as the increased number of people and lack of attention make it easy for criminals. Luckily, the CSS Tactical Area Managers recommend the following tips to keep you safe:

1. Don’t draw large amounts of cash from an ATM and if using a bank

Vary your schedule, route to and from the branch, and be careful about displaying what you’re doing. Criminals identify targets and alert their partners who observe the most opportune time to rob. Where possible, pay bonuses and wages via EFT.

2. Be vigilant in the driveway

When returning home, take notice of the cars parked near your entrance, and be wary of cars holding multiple occupants. It is advisable that you remain in the roadway until all cars following you have passed, and your gate or garage is completely open. Pull in when it’s all clear around you and remain vigilant until the gate or door has closed completely. If you are unsure, rather drive around the block – chances are, if the car is still behind you, you have cause for concern.

3. Don’t idle outside your home

When letting guests into or out of your home, don’t spend time standing outside. Rather say your hellos and goodbyes within the property, to avoid creating an opportunity for criminals to rob you.

4. Educate your domestic staff

Inform them if you are expecting people at the house, providing guests names and arrival times, contact details of the supplier, or ask them to call you to confirm prior to letting anyone onto the property. They must be especially cautious of people posing as members of the council, electricity or telecoms providers. They must have a panic button near or on them at all times.

5. Sliding gates

Sliding gates can be lifted off the rails in a matter of moments. Fit pins and brackets that prevent the gate from being shifted. Exterior doors are also vulnerable if they only have a single lock fitted. If the lock has a traditional keyhole, it can be removed in 25 seconds, allowing the door to be opened.

6. Don’t neglect your mail

Don’t allow post and papers to build up outside your home. If you don’t have a caretaker, ask a friend or neighbor to clear away evidence that you may be away. Special care must be given to the paper slips left by armed response companies, which are often left outside.
