Year-end awards celebrate those who deserve it

KYALAMI - SUN Valley's domestic workers, gardeners and grooms united in a day of celebration for the Sun Valley Domestic Crime Watch (SVDCW) year-end awards ceremony and party recently held at Cluny Farm.

Bonnie Friedman, the SVDCW champion and organiser said, “The year-end awards involves quite a lot of work, but the Sun Valley residents all pitch in and at the end of the day, the enjoyment and the smiles on the faces of the staff make it all worthwhile.”

Every year during November, the SVDCW members get together to celebrate, along with the Midrand police and Community Policing Forum (CPF). It is a great event in which everyone mixes in a more informal atmosphere and bonds between Midrand police, Sector 4 crime forum and the domestic staff are strengthened.

The monthly meetings last only one hour because of the limited time, as everyone had to rush back to their work immediately after the lecture. The Sun Valley Residents’ Association promotes the year-end party believing it to be a great opportunity to spend some quality time together. The staff receive certificates in acknowledgement of their attendance and contribution during the year and are then served with a homemade lunch. The residents in Sun Valley are also always so generous and assist in cooking food, preparing salads and treats and helping out with all the many other tasks needed to pull off a great party.

In some years, Sun Valley has joined all the Johannesburg suburbs for a huge awards ceremony and in other years, the valley has opted to have a more local affair as the cost of hiring a bus, in the years when it is not sponsored, was substantial and so it was found to be a great alternative to sometimes have the ceremony in Sun Valley.

Pierre Hefer, one of the residents’ association volunteers said, “The year-end awards ceremony is one of the most anticipated events in Sun Valley. The day is always great fun and is spoken about for months after the party is over.”
