Reckless taxi driver shot by traffic police

DIEPSLOOT - A 29-year-old taxi driver was shot and wounded by traffic police in Diepsloot on 25 November.

According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, spokesperson for Diepsloot police, the suspect had been driving in the wrong lane, facing oncoming traffic, near Diepsloot Mall.

He was stopped by Metro Police but during an attempt to apprehend him the suspect grabbed an officer’s handgun.

He pointed the firearm at one of the officers and pulled the trigger, however no shot was discharged.

The other traffic officer then drew his pistol and fired a shot, wounding the suspect on his upper body.

The taxi driver was taken to a local hospital in a stable condition.

Diepsloot police are now investigating cases of attempted murder, robbery and reckless and negligent driving in relation to the incident.

Mavimbela said the suspect will be charged and is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
