ROSEBANK – Dreaming of doughnuts. Red velvet flavoured, chocolate or the classic, secret recipe glaze.

This is how more than a hundred doughnut enthusiasts spent the evening of 24 November while camping outside of the new Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop at The Zone, Rosebank, waiting in anticipation of its grand opening at 7am this morning.

For those who don’t know, Krispy Kreme is an American confectionery franchise whose speciality is of course, soft, sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, goose bump inducing doughnuts in a variety of flavours. Note, you have been warned of its delicious, possibly addictive, onslaught on your taste buds.

In other words, if you’re on the Banting diet, then do yourself a favour and just move swiftly along, this is only for serious doughnut lovers.

A first for Africa, the Krispy Kreme shop is be the 800th of its kind to open its doors across the globe outside of the United States.

Chief executive officer of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts South Africa, Gerry Thomas, exuded pride before the opening, stating that the whole project has been in the works for two years already, getting the ball rolling for the official grand opening.

When asked why he thought the franchise would be successful in this country, he said, “I know the brand well because I have been fortunate enough to travel in the past.

“Krispy Kreme [the international franchise], via the U. S. Trade Commission at the U. S. Embassy, made inquiries about coming to South Africa. So, since our first interview with them, we have been quite keen and interested.”

Thomas continued to say that they are planning to open 31 outlets across the country, 19 of which will be in Gauteng, over the next five years. The Gautrain Station in Sandton is the ensuing planned location for the second outlet, with most provincial business nodes outside of Gauteng getting their own Krispy Kreme Doughnut shops soon.

“We are going full speed ahead,” said Thomas with confidence. “Production has already begun at our factory in Linbro Park.”

Thomas concluded by saying that he utterly grateful for all the loyal local fans waiting for the doors to open. “I thank them for their support and patronage.”
