Survey reveals Kyalami residents oppose development

KYALAMI – According to a survey released on 5 November, 96 percent of Kyalami residents oppose further development, believing it will put pressure on already strained services.

Entitled the Kyalami Plan Survey, designed by volunteers forming the Kyalami plan team who wished to find out, statistically, the thoughts of local residents. The survey reflects the wishes of residents and visitors to the area regarding development over the next five years.

In total, 669 responses were received, consisting of 519 owners and residents in the area, and 150 visitors. The areas from which the responses were received are detailed in the survey results. Owners, tenants, staff and visitors were eligible to respond.

The survey asked Greater Kyalami residents a myriad of questions on traffic, densities, security, amenities and environmental issues.

Of the 519 owner respondents, 96.7 percent said that further development would put pressure on already strained services.

When respondents were asked what type of development they would support, 53.7 percent of respondents agreed to bed and breakfast type accommodation and 12.5 percent of respondents agreed to coffee shop types.

Rosemary Sandison, a member of the Kyalami planning team and a Beaulieu resident, explained that the results seem to indicate little community support for intrusive development and activities in this valuable recreation and sensitive environmental area.

The survey also revealed that the majority of residents (68 percent of respondents) opposed municipal piped sewage if it would result in greater development in the area. A further 79.6 percent of respondents agreed that subdivision and sectional title approvals should be temporarily prohibited.

A large number of respondents attributed the rural country atmosphere as a reason for moving to or purchasing property in the Greater Kyalami area. A similar percentage cited these factors as their reason to continue living in the area, along with outdoor sports, appreciation of nature and security.

The results have been provided to a number of residents’ associations that want to formulate plans for their areas, and will be presented to the City of Joburg to indicate the wishes of the Kyalami area for the Regional Spatial Development (RSDF) process in 2016.

There will be a workshop to start putting the feedback into a draft which will take place on 28 November from 9am to 1pm, at the Cherry Country Lodge, situated on 56 Pine Road, Kyalami AH.

The results are also available online.
