Creating jobs for the community

DIEPSLOOT – Since opening its doors in 2012, the Mowana Spa, a wellness sanctuary situated at the Indaba Hotel, continues to bring hope to more than 90 Diepsloot residents who have all found decent work there.

Clive Oliver, manager of the spa, said to date they employed 97 people from Diepsloot.

One of those is Minah Mosupi who started working as a therapist in 2012. The mother of two has slowly climbed the ladder from therapist to floor supervisor, with the potential of moving up to a managerial position. She explained that the spa had given her hope and a clearer direction for the future. “I am able to raise two children and plan on completing my matric, then applying for a qualification in business,” she said.

Another employee, Theresia Madiye, said being employed at the spa gave her an opportunity to finish her medical degree which she was forced to drop out of due to lack of funds.

Oliver explained that all employees went for a three-week basic training course in massage, and food and beverage training, enabling them to be multi-skilled.

“The idea is for all employees to have a cross-section of skills, obviously depending on what is needed at the time,” he said.
