For the love of art and animals

DOUGLASDALE – Taking Mandela Day, celebrated on 18 July each year, to a whole new level, Douglasdale resident Christy Garden, has combined her love of art and animals, to create beautifully hand-drawn portraits of animals which she sells for R250 each.

A graphic designer by profession, Garden decided to do her bit for Mandela Day by dedicating her free time to drawing portraits of animals for a whole year in an attempt to raise funds for the Ark Animal Rescue shelter.

“The idea came while I was thinking about what I could do for Mandela Day… I couldn’t volunteer my time as much as I wanted, and so I thought I could raise funds and donate it to the centre,” she explained.

Garden who has raised more than R5 000 so far, plans to donate the money to the Ark Animal Centre on Mandela Day next year.

According to Candice Eilertsen of Ark Animal Centre, Garden draws anything from wild animals to hamsters, and her only requirement is that a decent picture is provided.

“She is a ridiculously talented artist,” Eilertsen added.

Anyone interested in ordering and supporting the Precious Portraits Project for Ark initiative can e-mail Garden directly or contact her on Facebook.
