EcoMobility challenge hits Joburg
JOBURG - A group of local celebrities and government officials participated in this year’s EcoMobility Challenge on 21 October.
The challenge involved numerous teams making their way from Braamfontein to Alice Lane in Sandton with the main objective of emitting the least amount of carbon on route to the finishing point.
CEO of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Dr Morné du Plessis said, “The goal is to use as many forms of public transport in the city while finishing with the lowest carbon footprint. Participants are given data with regards to different carbon emission volumes of various forms of transport and calls for important decisions to be made.”
MMC of Roads and Transport for the City of Johannesburg, Christine Walters, who was part of the winning team with actor Maps Maponyane, said this is the third year the challenge had been running during transport month, but the first time for the EcoMobility Festival.
Walters added that the challenge allowed people from different backgrounds, professions and cultures to band together behind the common goal of public transport and support it while creating awareness of carbon emissions.
Miss Earth South Africa for 2015, Carla Victor, who came to show her support said, “I think the challenge is an amazing initiative which ties in perfectly with EcoMobility Month. And from a Miss Earth perspective, getting people to be active citizens is a very important thing.”
