Annual Heronbridge College cook-off at Hirsh’s Fourways

FOURWAYS - Hirsch's Fourways hosted the Heronbridge College Master-Chef Competition on 8 October, with over 80 matriculants participating in a cook-off.

The cook-off comprised five teams who cooked on a Weber gas braai, while the other five teams cooked on five SMEG gas top stoves respectively, forming a ‘braai vs fry’ competition.

The runners-up of the competition were groups called On Fire and The Heat. Each group member walked away with a Taste of Hirsch’s cookbook.

The winning team was YoYo Mama’s who walked away with the cookbook and a R500 Hirsch’s voucher.

The recipes were planned prior to the competition and pupils were judged on various categories ranging from presentation, creativity, preparation, taste and budget.

The entertainment for the evening was provided by John-Peter Gernaat, a professional laughter specialist, who provided some laughter relief before the pupils went head-to-head on the cook-off floor.

The Heronbridge matriculants were required to make a main course with a budget of R80 and lunch using the leftovers for the next day.

The three judges of the cook-off were celebrity chef Vaatjie from the popular TV show Toks n Tjops, Afrikaans pop singer and songwriter, Zurilda Johnston, and Keith Wilke, the principal of Heronbridge College.

The cook-off was an important event for the pupils to participate in as it contributed towards the final portfolio mark for life orientation.
