UPDATE: Gang warfare erupts at Leeuwkop Prison

KYALAMI - According to statement issued by the Department of Correctional Services, the rapid response of Correctional officials prevented serious injuries from happening during an alleged gang fight on the night of 13 October.

14 October; 12.50 pm

According to preliminary investigations by the Department of Corrections, the gang fight is thought to have occurred in one of the cells at Leeuwkop Medium A Correctional Centre.

Correctional officials raised the alarm.

Two inmates sustained minor injuries during the fight and were transported to hospital for further medical treatment. They are now back in custody.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the offenders sustained the injuries as a result of stabbing each other with window panes.

A search operation was also conducted.

The statement reads, “The Department wishes to clearly state that there was no escape at the centre, as alleged by some media. Investigations into this matter are continuing.”

 

14 October; 7.33 am

Leeuwkop Prison sounded alarms at around 10 pm on the night of 13 October due to an inmate stabbing incident.

According to Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe, a group of inmates were stabbing each other in the prison however prison officials were unable to use the prison telephones because they were broken and therefore had no choice but to sound the alarm.

 

14 October; 7.15 am

There are unconfirmed reports that prisoners escaped from Leeuwkop Prison at around 10 pm on the night of 13 October.

According to a tweet by ward 93 councillor, Annette Deppe, she believed that prisoners had possibly escaped from Leeuwkop prison.

Numerous residents living around Leeuwkop Prison said that sirens could be heard late on the night of 13 October.

A representative from The Department of Correctional Services has been contacted for comment however he said they could only confirm the reports after an hour.
