Diepsloot increases security measures in fight against crime

DIEPSLOOT - THE crime-ridden township of Diepsloot recently increased its security measures in its fight against crime and has fitted 500 homes within the area with alarm systems with the capacity to alert 10 neighbours and relatives through SMSes whenever a break-in occurs.

According to recent crime statistics, the rate of murder in Diepsloot has decreased by 9 percent since the installation of the alarm systems.

Chairperson of the Gauteng Community Policing Forum (CPF), Andy Mashaile, said the system produces so much noise that criminals are scared off immediately.

β€œJust a push of a button could report crime [incidents] to neighbours and the nearby Diepsloot police officers,” said Mpho Pasha during an interview with Eyewitness News (EWN).

Diepsloot police spokesman Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said the alarm system had also assisted police in arresting a suspect who was allegedly caught in the act while attempting to rape a victim.

β€œAs a result of the alarm, the man was arrested on the spot,” said Mavimbela in an interview with EWN.

DA councillor of the area, Refilwe Mathebula, hailed the crime-fighting initiative which she described as a success.

Mathebula said she also had the system fitted within her home. She, however, said the system only functions in a home with electricity, leaving out Ext 1, 11, 12 and 13.

β€œIt would have been helpful if the gadgets had been installed in the whole township but, unfortunately, there is no electricity in other extensions where the crime rate is crazy,” said Mathebula.
