Comply or get killed: how to stay safe in a robbery

JOBURG – Founder and co-ordinator of the Domestic Watch programme, Penny Steyn cautioned the public on fighting back in a robbery.

Speaking at a Domestic Watch meeting held in Paulshof, Steyn urged attendees to pick their battles carefully. “The 2014/2015 crime statistics reflect a grim picture,” Steyn said.

“You cannot fight a gun, a screwdriver or more than one person, your life is far more important,” she said.

Steyn explained that she had heard far too many stories of victims losing their lives to criminals as they decided to fight back, “In some cases it’s not clever to fight back. There is nothing more important than your life,” she said.

According to Steyn, the best thing a victim could do in a robbery was to co-operate and stay calm – the aim is to get out of the robbery alive. “Once a criminal has committed one murder, they can do it again,” she said.

The recent crime statistics revealed that the number of murders registered in South Africa during the 2014/2015 policing financial year increased by 4.6 percent from the previous year, with 17 805 people killed in the 12 months between April last year and March this year.
