Midrand cop abducted, dropped off and given R50 taxi fare

KYALAMI - Midrand police are looking for eight suspects who recently committed an armed robbery at a shopping centre in Kyalami.

Midrand police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela, said the incident took place around 8pm on 18 September.

“[Midrand police officer] Constable Enock Mnisi was assisting two ladies with regards to a domestic violence complaint. He then went with the women to a shopping centre in Kyalami to buy food, and on his arrival at the centre, a business robbery was in progress,” said Tlamela.

Tlamela explained that the suspects noticed the police officer before he noticed them. While six continued with the robbery, two armed men approached the police vehicle and told the officer to get out of the car, leaving the two women inside the vehicle.

The suspects forced the officer into their vehicle and drove off with him. They later dropped him off along the freeway next to the Marlboro off-ramp towards Alexandra and gave him R50 for transport to return to Midrand.

The suspects also stole the officer’s cellphone. Tlamela added that it is still unknown how much was stolen from the store in the shopping centre, but police are investigating the matter to bring the criminals to book.

All eight suspects are at large and no arrests have been made.
