City Power beefs up security to reduce copper theft

KYA SANDS – Following repeated incidents of copper cable theft, City Power recently beefed up security in Kya Sands and Farmall in an attempt to prevent the theft of electricity cables.

Speaking at a Joburg Plus meeting for Ward 96, Attie van Staden, City Power Randburg depot area manager said, “We’ve got our security people hidden and visible to monitor hotspots in the area.”

Van Staden added that their surveillance people experienced a lot of success in nabbing copper thieves, however, the problem was much bigger than them. “We are looking at ways to stop the problem, but of course it will come at a cost. We are not in the security business but we are trying,” he said.

According to Van Staden, copper theft was a major problem.

“The problem is huge, it’s not just a Kya Sands’ or Farmall issue, it’s a Joburg problem. Areas around Bryanston are the new hotspots for copper theft,” he said.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane urged community members who knew anything about the copper thieves to come forward and report the incidents.
