Premier launches William Nicol’s dual carriageway

FOURWAYS - Gauteng Premier David Makhura and his MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi officially launched the William Nicol Drive phase 1 project.

The glittering opening ceremony of the R300-million project was attended by Diepsloot residents, councillors and officials from Steyn City Development, a partner of Gauteng government in the venture.

Speaking during the ceremony, Makhura said road development was a catalyst to massive development in Johannesburg North.

“In 10 year’s time there will be factories and industries along the N14,” said Makhura.

He expressed appreciation to Steyn City officials for joining hands with government in rolling out the infrastructural development. “One-third of the costs are being carried by them and this is the kind of partnership which the government expects from the private sector,” said Makhura.

He announced that Steyn City Development would also come up with low-cost housing projects in around the Diepsloot area. The Premier added that plans were afoot to extend Gautrain Services to Lanseria.

The visibly bubbly ANC boss promised local residents that Reya Vaya bus services would be soon crisscrossing Johannesburg North.

He said the idea would bring factories closer to the people, adding that massive development was earmarked to be rolled out around Diepsloot.

“The place to be in the next 10 years is Johannesburg North and not Sandton. Sandton has already reached its saturation point in terms of development,” said Makhura.

The project’s scope includes the demolition of the existing Jukskei River Bridge and the construction of two new bridges across the river.

A new interchange in the vicinity of Erling Street intersection will provide access to the Telesure and Steyn City Developments in the west and Century City developments towards the east of the K46 would also be constructed. The road will connect Bryanston, Sandton, Hyde Park, Rosebank and Johannesburg via Jan Smuts Avenue. It will also improve access to Diepsloot and Fourways towards Randburg.
