City denounces firefighters’ allegations

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg has denounced allegations made by suspended firefighters about substandard working conditions and claims of corruption and maladministration.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, stated that EMS had noted with concern allegations of substandard working conditions, and claims of corruption and maladministration made by a group of disgruntled firefighters at a media briefing hosted by Democratic Alliance councillor Micheal Sun.

Mulaudzi said, “The disgruntled group said, among other things, that they were even prepared to lose their jobs. The firefighters were projected as brave men willing to forfeit their jobs because they are allegedly troubled by a lack of resources. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

He added that the firefighters who participated in the press conference have been on suspension since 23 July this year for, among other charges, misconduct, participating in an illegal strike, breach of contract of employment and condition of service.

“EMS management would like to assure Joburg residents that fire stations are being resourced on a continual basis. The mandate of Emergency Management Services is saving lives and property, and to ensure that the residents get professional treatment and assistance at all times,” Mulaudzi said.
