Another shack fire in Kya Sands
KYA SANDS – More than 50 people were left homeless after a fire ripped through the Kya Sands informal settlement on 11 August.
According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for Douglasdale Police Station, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous, claimed the fire was caused by a woman who found her partner with another woman. “Upon seeing the two together she drenched his bed with paraffin and set it alight,” she said.
Muthan explained that there was no truth in these reports and police were still investigating the matter.
Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane said the City’s Disaster Management and the Department of Social Welfare were working closely with local non-governmental organisations to ensure that those affected had a decent place to stay. Mafokwane said, “There’s still a lot of work to be done and we are taking every day as it comes.”
Mafokwane added that, ideally, the plan was to have those affected by the fire housed in more permanent facilities by 17 August. He added that plans were in place to get officials from the Department of Home Affairs to assist with replacing identification documents.
