Fourways pupils go to Hollywood

FOURWAYS – Seven local drama pupils from Upstage Concepts Acting Studio recently travelled to Los Angeles, USA, for the World Championships of Performing Arts.

The world championships is an annual competition which provides a platform for international students to be judged and taught by industry leaders. The pupils competed in various acting and modelling categories, winning a total of 55 medals, three scholarships for the New York Film Academy, and eight Overall Divisional Winner Awards.

Donnaley Avis, a Grade 11 pupil at HeronBridge College, received the Overall Grand Champion Award for Acting, beating hundreds of contestants from 62 different countries.

Jill Avis, owner of Upstage Concepts, who had won the Overall Best Coach Award at the South African Championships in April, was presented with a fully paid trip to the World Championships to accompany her pupils. Avis said, “The standard of work was exceptionally high, but our South African team shone and proved that their work is of an international standard.”

Skye Goss, a Grade 7 pupil at Dainfern College said, “It was the most incredible experience to compete with talent from all over the world.”
