Brewing up a storm

KYALAMI - Ivory Park Secondary School's science pupils enjoyed a school tour to the Cyril Ramaphosa World of Learning in Kyalami.

The institute conducted tours around its facility for science pupils from various schools as part of National Science Week.

The tour included a visit to the institute’s alcohol brewing facility where they were taught the necessary safety precautions to be taken in the workshop when working with chemicals by chemical engineer, Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela. They were shown the ingredients that are used in the brewing of alcohol, and Nxusani-Mawela also cautioned pupils about underage drinking.

Engineer, Mike Williams also spoke to the pupils about different types of engineering opportunities in the brewing industry.

“Science and mathematics are the key subjects you need to become an engineer and to become successful in the engineering world,” Williams told the pupils.

At the end of the tour, pupils were asked whether they wanted to become brewery engineers or if they were interested in the world of engineering.
