Teacher lends a helping hand to children with cancer

MAGALIESSIG – Joyce dos Santos, a teacher at Buttercup Preschool, held a fundraiser for one of her pupils and other children living with cancer at the Fourways Farmers' Market.

Dos Santos said the idea of the fundraiser came after her pupil, Kriya Govender was diagnosed with leukaemia. According to the teacher, this pulled at her heart strings and she had to do something to help.

“We started off with a small blood donation drive and have now escalated to a big fundraiser,” she said.

“My class parents have been amazing and have come up with loads of ideas to help raise funds.”

According to Dos Santos the fundraiser raised a whopping R64 000 which will be donated to Cupcakes of Hope, a registered charity that financially assists parents of children suffering from cancer by helping them pay for treatment.

Govender’s mother, Saranya said, “We decided to donate the money to Cupcakes of Hope after seeing so many children benefiting from the charity on a hospital visit.”
