Alleged Diepsloot baby-killer arrested

DIEPSLOOT - The alleged killer of a three-month-old baby was among 204 suspects who were arrested in the Honeydew Cluster, during operations held over the past week.

According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, spokesperson for Diepsloot Police, the alleged baby killer was traced to Braam Fischer, on the West Rand, after being on the run for three weeks.

Mavimbela said it is alleged that during an argument with his girlfriend, the baby’s mother, the 25-year-old suspect assaulted both the mother and the baby girl with a hammer in Diepsloot Extension 2, three weeks ago.

The suspect had accused the mother of cheating and questioned whether he was the biological father of the baby.

Both victims were admitted to hospital after the incident but the baby succumbed to her serious head injuries and died. The mother was treated for less serious upper body injuries and his since been discharged from hospital.

The suspect’s alleged accomplice was caught soon after the incident.

After his arrest, the baby-murder accused made a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court last last week and waived his right to a bail application. He is expected to appear in court with the co-accused on 1 September.

The rest of the suspects who were apprehended during the operations were arrested for offences ranging from assault, robbery, attempted murder, possession of drugs, housebreaking and murder.

All these suspects are expected to appear in Randburg and Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon.
