Conservancy and City join hands to clean up for Mandela Day

KYALAMI - Different organisations joined hands in true Madiba style to do their part a day before Mandela Day by cleaning up parts of the Jukskei River on Main Road just after Lonehill.

Initiated by the Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gekco), the event saw more than 50 volunteers who all got their hands dirty for the love of the environment.

Kristin Kallesen, chairperson of Gekco, who was stunned by the turn-out said, “It is only through working together that we can make sure our environment remains clean and suitable for future generations.”

She added that Mandela Day was the perfect opportunity for the community and various organisations to contribute their time and that the clean-up would also take place on Mandela Day, 18 July.

Annette Deppe, Ward 93 councillor who also took part, thanked Gekco for organising the event; while the City’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Regional Director Abigail Ndlovu explained that it was their job to keep the area clean.

The clean-up was also attended by prisoners of Leeuwkop Prison, who were excited to lend 67 minutes of their time. Mthuthuzeli Kampi, assistant director at Leeuwkop Prison Medium A division, added that the prison got involved after they received an invitation and organised 15 of their offenders to join in.

Vusithemba Mthethwa, Pikitup operational supervisor, explained that Pikitup was happy to join in, and would continue to lend their hand and time to each and every cleaning campaign. Mthethwa added that Pikitup would continue cleaning up the area every two weeks.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, Kwagga Holdings and City Parks also got involved in the clean-up.
