Nico Myburg officially launched Fourways’ first bungee-jumping attraction on 24 June.
He was hooked after his first interaction with the sport 21 years ago and his interest gave birth to the idea that there was a need to “bring bungee to the people,” of Joburg.
Thanks to a sky bar above the 50m-high bungee platform and a small rock climbing wall without an age limit below it, this is truly an attraction that can appeal to all.
“As a non-bungee-jumping visitor, the actual structure is an eyesore. The sky bar is a redeeming feature – there’s most likely a nice view up there…people will be curious to go up and see,” said Ryan Berell, a medical student attending the launch.
“This is a very different way of seeing Joburg,” said Berell after ascending the structure.
With Fourways set to boom, Martin Spencer – the engineer of the bungee structure – is unable to contain his excitement. “It’s something different [for our business to be involved in] so we just kinda jumped at the opportunity to be involved.”
Bungee jumping may be considered a baby of the sporting world; the first modern jump was done by members of the Dangerous Sports Club at Oxford University in 1979. Today, the sport is a recreational activity enjoyed by people all over the world.
