Attempted hijacking foiled

LONEHILL – The Neighbourhood Watch for Douglasdale Sector 1 Community Policing Forum reacted swiftly after a local resident informed them that they were almost hijacked in their driveway by two alleged suspects in a black VW Golf on 29 June.

According to reports on social media, patrollers were able to follow the suspects and contacted Douglasdale police in the interim. A pursuit ensued by police members, who were joined by the Soweto flying squad, which led all the way to the N12 highway past Grasmere Plaza where they were able to move in on the suspicious vehicle.

Douglasdale police could not confirm whether any arrests were made and the case is deemed highly sensitive at this stage.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale Policing Board, Jean Berdou, was able to shed some light on the situation, however.

“The forum wishes to point out that our social media platforms are vital in keeping residents notified, as well as protected against crime by providing real-time information between police and said residents,” Berdou stated.

“We are required to keep our community fully informed at all times, except when it comes to an investigation of this sensitive nature in attempts not to undermine it. We therefore decline to comment further on this matter.”

Berdou said he still encourages the Douglasdale community members to continue supporting all anti-crime initiatives and operations by providing information and tip-offs by contacting Douglasdale Police Station on 011 699 1300, or Crime Line on 32211.

“Further information on the investigation will be released by police at an appropriate stage,” Berdou concluded.
