Jewish Journey awaits

JOBURG - The annual Jewish Education Festival, which comprises a conference, is set to amaze this year with over 120 sessions covering all aspects of Jewish life and culture.

The winter festival allows for participants to engage, connect and share their own unique Jewish journey.

This year, Limmud Johannesburg is flying in 16 international presenters from across the world including England, Israel, America, Australia, Poland, Russia and even Sweden. Local talent will also be in abundance with members of the community offering some insightful perspectives of contemporary society. Some of the highlights include Glynis Breytenbach, former NPA prosecutor and current DA parliamentarian as well as media personalities such as John Perlman and Arthur Goldstuck.

For lovers of the arts, photographer Roger Ballen will present his work, which has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of Modern Art, Kafka House and the Mannheim Ludwigshafen Heidelberg in Germany. He has even collaborated with Die Antwoord on their music videos. Well-known political cartoonist Dov Fedler will also present his new book Out of Line, covering his life and work. Fedler will conduct a workshop teaching young aspiring artists and commentators how to draw their own cartoons.

Jewish communities from all corners of the earth will also be profiled with Hugh Raichlin presenting on the Jews of China. Mickie Jacobs and Dan Brotman will also enchant the audience with tales of their travels through India.

Although Limmud is a Jewish conference, speakers from the broader South African community will also be presenting. Adam Habib, vice-chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand will also talk about the challenges of creating dialogue among students. Professor of Archaeology at UNISA, Coenraad Scheepers, will give a fascinating account of the ancient civilisations of the holy land.

The conference will be held on 31 July to 2 August at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways.
