Roundabout generates more friction than flow

CRAIGAVON - Recent road renovations in Fourways are generating more friction than smooth flow of traffic, and residents are fuming over a number of inconveniences caused by these roadworks.

Their complaints range from traffic jams, continuous chopping up of road surfaces and the absence of road signs.

Andy Thomas complained on the Fourways Review Facebook page this week about a roundabout in Inchanga Road in Craigavon which she said was poorly designed and remains unfinished.

“There are no road signs warning motorists and it seems too large. I am not a civil engineer so would be interested to know what the correct diameter for a roundabout should be vis-à-vis the number of roads joining it and width of feeder roads,” asked Thomas.

Thomas also posted the picture of the roundabout online and described it as extraordinarily large as compared with any other traffic circles.

Spokesperson for the Joburg Road Agency, Bertha Scheepers, said their traffic engineering department will issue appropriate instructions to the depot to rectify the matter on signage. Turning to the question of the size of the roundabout, Scheepers urged Thomas to arrange a one-on-one meeting with her department, adding that the subject of design guidelines and geometric standards were complex.

“The questions with regard to the design of roundabouts are complex and covered in a variety of engineering design guidelines and geometric standards of which the contents cannot be summarised in an article,” said Scheepers.

Another Fourways resident alleged that the recent contractors who were working along William Nicol Drive put down the wrong markings on the road.

“Only one lane going straight has been painted on Sunrise Boulevard going across into Fourways Boulevard towards Fourways Mall. There need to be two straight lanes (the two middle ones) as there always were. The left lane is a left turn and the right lane is a right turn,” said the resident.

The agency did not provide a response to this resident’s query by the time of publication.
