Local star headed for Obama Leadership Programme

JOHANNESBURG – Local celebrity choreographer Paul Modjadji has been selected by the United States government to take part in the Obama Leadership Programme, the Young African Leaders Initiative (Yali).

Modjadji is a writer, entrepreneur and the official brand ambassador of the City Of Tshwane, as well as a two-times dance world champion.

“It is an honour to be chosen and I am proud to represent South Africa in this programme. The selection is an affirmation of my work as a young artist and social developer and it’s encouraging to know that my work represents and stands for something significant in South Africa and around the world,” Modjadji said.

He’ll be working with the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, which is a flagship programme of Yali. The programme comprises six weeks in intensive leadership training and mentoring in New Orleans, Louisiana and Washington, DC, starting on 19 June.

Ryan Ingrassia, public diplomacy officer at the US Embassy commented on the significance of Yali: “The US Embassy is thrilled to have a performer of Modjadji’s talent participate as a 2015 Mandela Washington Fellow. While studying in the US, he will have the opportunity to learn with Africans from across the continent and experience the multi-cultural energy of the city of New Orleans.”

The programme helps young leaders gain skills and connections needed to aid their career trajectories and contribute to strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, and enhancing peace and security in Africa.

“I plan to continue using the lessons I will learn to assist me in building and growing my foundation, Leaders Who Dare To Dream Foundation. Leadership qualities are incredibly valuable and I hope to pass these on to as many youngsters as possible. I look forward to being more empowered and to have the skills and experience to do what I do at a higher level and give back to the community,” he added.
