There’s a buzz in Parkmore

PARKMORE - Buzz sessions are all the rage at the Field and Study Centre in Parkmore.

Launched by director Hanneke Rauch in 2012, Buzz sessions are custom designed to develop children’s confidence, boost their social skills and offer them a platform to express their individuality. She works with children between the ages of five and nine.

“Every child exposed to some level of creativity will benefit in one way or another,” explained Rauch. “It does not mean that everyone has to be a Michael Jackson. The sessions help with creative thinking and confidence.”

Rauch works with over 20 leaders, who facilitate the sessions at various locations all around Johannesburg. Waydene Laing and Stephanie Biza work closely with her at the centre. The two take the children through three sections of the session which include dancing, singing and drama.

Rauch is a training actor at the drama department of the University of Cape Town. “I was always questioning the role of drama in communities, the good it could do, the questions it could raise, and the answers one could arrive at through role play and improvisations,” she added.

She believes that drama can be used as a tool for personal and social development. “Buzz is taking the lead in making this happen,” added Rauch. “Since I have a real passion for the young, there was no other way but to apply what I know best, and start up a company that could offer the benefits of drama to all children of South Africa.”
