CHOC sweetens it for donors

FOURWAYS – THE Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC) has come up with a sweet way to reward the support they receive from their donors in their new loyalty reward programme Choc-olate.

The programme is the first charity rewards programme of its kind and was launched at a gala dinner in Montecasino sponsored by the casino and Tsogo Sun.

CHOC was established about 46 years ago as a support group for parents of children living with cancer. The groups were set up in Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics, hence the name CHOC. The groups merged in 2000, and now Joburg serves as the head office and has six regional offices, two branches, and 13 accommodation facilities close to treatment centres.

During the dinner, former SABC 2 People of the South talk show host Dali Tambo, said he was a huge supporter.

“This is the only charity that provides comprehensive support to children with cancer and other blood diseases. We have visited one of their facilities where the children are in Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, it is a medical version of Disneyland,” said Tambo.

He added that without this foundation, children, especially those from previously disadvantaged areas wouldn’t receive the assistance they currently receive.

Among other services, CHOC provides accommodation close to hospitals for mothers of children who have been admitted.

CEO of CHOC, Carl Queiros, said with the number of children in their houses growing daily, he hopes the Choc-olate initiative will encourage more donors to give to the foundation.

“This money helps the CHOC houses throughout the country with food, gifts, early childhood diagnosis, treatment and bereavement sessions,” he said.

He encouraged companies to sign up for their clients or staff, or as individuals. Joining the rewards programme costs R59 a month for benefits worth R3 000. CHOC has partnered with various companies to provide donors with these partnered benefits.

The two-for-one benefits go across a catalogue of treats from movie to tickets spa treatments and dining.
