Striking taxi drivers dump Diepsloot and Randburg commuters

Diepsloot - A CRIPPLING taxi strike is underway on the Randburg and Diepsloot route.

Stranded commuters have been expressing their frustrations to Fourways Review.

“Just wana update you guys, there’s no taxis to take passengers to Diepsloot and the Q [queue] is too long maybe 300m long at Randburg taxi rank, but at least the taxi owners and the management from RULTA are forcing other taxis from cosmos city to take us home,” said one message.

Explaining the reasons for the strike, a taxi driver who requested anonymity said they were against the monopolisation of the taxi industry by a few individuals.

“A few taxi owners have 20 to 30 taxis and are exploiting us,” said the taxi driver.

The taxi associations were, however, tight-lipped about what the issues were.

The public relations officer of the National Taxi Alliance, Loeto Siriba confirmed that taxis drivers withdrew their services.

“I don’t have information on the reasons for the strike,” he said.

Nkululeko Buthelezi of the South African National Taxi Council also remained tight-lipped when Fourways Review contacted him to get answers about the strike.
