National wholesaler rewards youth

JOBURG - Independent Cash and Carriers Buying Group are searching for South Africa’s finest young community leader.

The hunt is about finding talented individuals who assist and develop their communities, making a real difference in poverty and hunger-stricken areas. They are seeking individuals that are not only uplifting various projects, but are also uplifting entire communities and ultimately changing lives for the better.

The group is the main sponsor for the ICC Young Community Shapers Award, for students between the ages of 16 and 25. The competition has been running for 11 years.

To qualify, entrants must have started a community project which has been operating successfully for at least a year. Those who have excelled in fulfilling community needs are selected as finalists.

Last year’s winner initiated extra lessons in Hammanskraal to help tutor scholars and even installed a few computers for them to access. Over a few years, her project had helped over 20 pupils to get bursaries and move on to study at higher educational institutions.

Gert Scheepers, CEO of ICC said, “It takes great heart and effort to change a tarnished environment for the better – especially if you’re young and financially disadvantaged. This is why we reward youngsters who build sustainable, ground-breaking initiatives. ”

“The competition is also a fantastic way to motivate other youths who will in future influence the nation.”

The competition will be aired on SABC and further details on how to enter are on ICC’s website.
