Water infrastructure affects parts of Sandton

SANDTON - Parts of Sandton will be affected as Joburg Water upgrades water infrastructure in the northern areas of Johannesburg during May.

According to Millicent Kabwe from Joburg Water, the entity will spend over R190 million to upgrade water infrastructure in a number of suburbs. Some of these areas include Morningside Ext. 1 and 40, Bryanston and Strathavon.

Kabwe added that over 120 000 metres of pipe will be replaced in these areas over a period of time using a number of different contractors. She said this initiative will create employment opportunities for the residents.

“Joburg Water recognises the inconvenience residents experience when a pipe bursts and water supply has to be shut down unexpectedly as a result of emergency repairs,” explained Kabwe. “Joburg Water is also aware of the rapid growth of the City which calls for infrastructure expansion to meet the daily demands. These are some of the reasons Joburg Water has undertaken to place water infrastructure upgrades as one of its priorities.”

Other areas where water infrastructure upgrades will take place include: Bramley North Ext 1 and Lombardy East, Lonehill, Randpark Ext. 4, Malanshof Ext. 5, Strydom Park, Dunkeld and Dunkeld West and Northcliff.

Kabwe added that during the construction period, there will be open trenches while the pipes are being replaced or installed. “Joburg Water requests residents to be extra vigilant when there is an open trench in their area to avoid accidents, and a special plea to parents to assist the entity by keeping their children away from these construction sites,” explained Kabwe.

She also said Joburg Water always puts the safety of the residents first whenever it embarks on activities involving excavations. “This is done by ensuring open trenches are properly barricaded and warning signage erected at all times,” said Kabwe. “In addition, the organisation will continue to engage and educate communities throughout the city about dangers of some of the construction sites.”
