City of Joburg bids Shoes farewell

JOBURG - THE City of Joburg will be bidding the late legend, John Lesiba 'Shoes' Mosheou, a fond farewell on Monday morning.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Chris Vondo, will be representing the City of Joburg at the memorial service to be held for the soccer legend at Grace Bible Church in Soweto – paying his condolences to friends, family and the soccer fraternity.

“Indeed his passing is an excruciating loss because he was the type of athlete who remained true to the game; most importantly he lived a clean life – like a true athlete should. To say his passing has struck a blow is to tell the truth,” said Vondo.

Shoes was one of the greatest players of his time and created a place for himself in the hearts of soccer fans all over the country.

Shoes’ exploits on the field were set in motion while still a high school pupil and that is why school soccer development is key.

Vondo added that when Shoes’ team of 1996 became the first and only side to clinch the African Cup of Nations, the late soccer player and his contemporaries proved that soccer can build the nation and nurture a new spirit of patriotism and self-determination.

Shoes will be laid to rest on Monday at a service to be held at Dobsonville Stadium at 9am and the cortege will leave for Westpark Cemetery (high profile section) at noon.
