Crime stats for March, brigadier issues warning

DOUGLASDALE - The Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) held their monthly meeting where the Douglasdale police gave a report back on criminal activity during March.

The meeting opened with Douglasdale Police Station commander Brigadier Lettie Hugo giving the Douglasdale policing precinct crime statistics for the month of March.

Some of the increases in crime included aggravated robbery, which is robbery with the use of a deadly weapon. This went up by four cases, while common assault went up by 18 cases. Hugo attributed most of the assault cases to domestic violence, which she explained was often related to the abuse of alcohol. She mentioned that two road rage cases also contributed to the increase in assaults.

In March, rape decreased by five cases and sexual assault by one case. Residential burglaries and theft of motor vehicles also decreased in March.

According to Hugo, the most problematic sector in the precinct is Sector 2, which experienced 37 percent of the total crime in March. Sector 2 includes Kya Sands, Bloubosrand, Chartwell and Farmall. Sector 1, which includes Olivedale and Jukskei park, experienced 30 percent of the total crime.

She added that the suburbs which experienced the most crime in March were Douglasdale, Northriding, Kya Sands and Fourways central.

Hugo mentioned that remote jamming at shopping centres and smash and grabs were still a big problem in the precinct and she implored residents to keep their valuables out of sight.

With regards to theft of motor vehicles Hugo said the public should take note that vehicles like Toyota Yarises and Fortunas, as well as VW Polos were being targeted.

In closing, Hugo mentioned that the public should be on the lookout for a white VW beetle which was used in a driveway robbery in Norscot Koppies at the beginning of April in which a woman was shot in her hand. The vehicle has also been linked to other house robbery cases which occurred in Randburg and the police are eager to bring the suspects to book.
