Social media rescues dog

FOURWAYS - Thanks to social media and the help of the community, a special dog who went missing after a thunderstorm, was returned to his owners on 8 April. Scooby panicked during a thunderstorm, dug a hole under a fence and escaped from his home.

Laura Whittaker from the Pets Empowerment Johannesburg, an organisation based outside Fourways, said they shared Scooby’s story on their Facebook page to help find him as soon as possible.

”We shared the story, explaining his last whereabouts and possible solutions if anyone had seen him or found him. We even visited various SPCAs in hope that we would find him there,” she said.

As luck would have it, Scooby was spotted outside a library in Kensington by two different people on 10 April. ”One of the individuals that spotted him contacted us and his owner. We rushed there and on arrival, Scooby’s owner was informed that a newspaper vendor had spotted him and actually stopped traffic to rescue the dog,” said Whitakker.

The vendor tied him up, gave him food and water and contacted the SPCA. One of the volunteers of the organisation visited the SPCA thereafter to confirm if it was indeed Scooby.

After two scary nights without his owners, Scooby was reunited with his family. Whitakker explained that it is stories and cases like this where social media and the community can work hand-in-hand to help those precious animals that can’t defend themselves.

”Scooby’s owners are attempting to track down the vendor that found and rescued their dog. We will let everyone know about this amazing citizen and his good deed,” she concluded.
