Seven armed robbers rob pastors in Douglasdale

DOUGLASDALE – Two unidentified pastors from Burundi flew into South Africa on 19 March with large amounts of cash, which was declared at OR Tambo International Airport upon arrival.

The pastors had arranged temporary residence at Inyati Sands Estate on Leslie Avenue in Douglasdale for the duration of their stay. It’s alleged that seven perpetrators followed the pastors from the airport and held them up at gunpoint as soon as they reached the estate. Luggage containing passports and all their cash was stolen. The amount was said to be $28 000 US (R220 000) contained in three suitcases and one briefcase.

Chairperson for the estate’s board of trustees, Zoe Hawkins said the incident was caught on their security cameras and the footage had been handed over to police.

“We were very grateful for the quick response we received from both the police and our security companies,” said Hawkins.

It is suspected that there may be an insider element which informed the suspects of the pastors’ declaration at the airport.

“We can confirm that a docket has been opened and that the driveway robbery is currently under investigation,” said Warrant Officer Balan Muthan of Douglasdale Police Station.

Airports Company South Africa could not be reached for comment on the story at the time of publication, but updates will follow when the spokesperson is available.
