Barbeque Downs talks better security and the K60

BARBEQUE DOWNS - Barbeque Downs Community held its annual general meeting on 11 March at Da Vincenzo’s restaurant.

The meeting saw many residents come out to support and discuss key issues in the area. Additionally, major community players like Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe, Ward 112 councillor and head of the forum Candice James and representative for the Midrand police Sector 4 crime forum Takis Michalakis were present.

Key issues concerning security, crime, vagrants present in the area, new developments, vacant properties, road infrastructures and social responsibilities were discussed.

Deppe discussed plans regarding the proposed K60 road which, if approved, will link Rivonia Road in Sunninghill to Main Road in Lonehill. She said council was attending to all objections from the larger community. The K60 will be a link for the suburbs of Barbeque Downs, Sunninghill, Paulshof and Lonehill, relieving the strain of traffic in the Barbeque Downs area.

James additionally stressed the increase of developments and residential complexes in the area and has motivated the momentum for the completion of the road as soon as possible. “We have 16-wheeler trucks driving on our farm roads and motorists use the back roads as a through-fare, this causes problems for the residents,” said James.

Additionally, Michalakis addressed the security and crime portfolio for the area. He said the forum is working closely with the Mirand Police Station in ways to crack down on criminals, vagrants and any illegal activity in the area. He also said the community needs to be more involved in the area and communicate illegal activities through the right channels.

The forum has plans to install four security cameras in the area in order to track down criminal activities and make the area a safer place. Although plans are still in the pipelines, the forum is pushing forward with the idea as the increasing amounts of vagrants in the area poses security threats as well.
