‘Stop-and-go system is necessary’

PAULSHOF - Motorists' frustration with the Witkoppen upgrade has reached an all-time high and now contractors are warning residents that the work will only be complete on 10 April.

Paulshof residents are bearing the brunt of the upgrade, since a one way stop-and-go system has been implemented just before Wroxham Road. Some residents report having to wait in traffic for up to an hour from the turn-off from Main Road to Witkoppen Road.

According to Terrence Mulalo, community liason officer for Phakama Civils and Construction, the contractors working on the upgrade, the stop-and-go system has been implemented because workers are recycling the other side of the road and concrete will be poured on this section soon. However, they will then have to wait for the concrete to dry before traffic can be moved to that side of the road and the side which is currently being utilised will then be recycled.

“The stop-and-go is also helping our workers with safety as we have had a lot of incidents and accidents on site,” Mulalo said. “However, everyone is pushing so that we can finish and some are also working night shifts.”

Mulalo apologised to the community on behalf of the contractor and said they are working against time to finish the project.
