Crime drops in Sector 1

DOUGLASDALE – The Sector 1 Community Policing Forum was pleased to announce that crime figures in the area for February have dropped significantly compared to the same period last year.

According to forum members, this was mostly thanks to their Neighbourhood Watch team which has put in 2 000 hours of street patrolling since its inception.

The forum held their monthly meeting at the Olivedale Library on 9 March. This was the last time the venue was to be used for the forum’s monthly meetings, because as from 13 April the meetings are to be held on the corner of Witkoppen and Church roads.

The meeting was opened by chairperson, Charmaine van Rijswijk who introduced and welcomed the new station commander for Douglasdale police, Brigadier Lettie Hugo. Hugo said the support that she had received from the Douglasdale community thus far had been overwhelming.

“Douglasdale Police Station has been going through a difficult time lately,” said Hugo. “But it’s back to basics now and we will do everything that we can to improve service delivery at the station.”

Sector commander for the forum, Constable Bernishia Subroyan discussed current crime figures which had seen a decrease in most types of crime. It was only malicious damage to property which increased slightly, while hijackings remained on a par with last year’s figures.

“Theft out of motor vehicles is still a big cause for concern in most areas,” said Subroyan. “Especially on Bellairs Drive, Blandford Road and Danziger Avenue.”

She appealed to motorists to always make sure their car doors were locked, and that no valuables were left visible in their vehicles. Residents should make sure that they have the contact details of the station operation room and sector vehicles available to them at all times.
