Law enforcement is needed to curb taxi issues

DOUGLASDALE - Founder of the Douglasdale Business Forum, Susan Mottram is irate as taxis continue to break the road laws on Kingfisher Drive.

Mottram has been monitoring the situation for a few months. “Taxis park illegally, stop in the middle of the road, endangering other motorists and commuters,” she said. “Bring back the law enforcement to this city. While one taxi blocks the lane to load and unload passengers, the other doubles up blocking the traffic even more.”

She would like the community to stand together to fight this issue and has started a Twitter hashtag; #taxiChaosKingfisher, where the public can tweet and post comments and photos of taxis breaking the law in the area.

Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana said law enforcement needed to be present at this particular intersection as a serious accident was imminent.

According to spokesperson for Metro police, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar the police are trying their best to be more proactive in these situations. There would be an increase in police activity in this specific area and any taxis breaking the law would be fined, said Minnaar. He added that commuters should not flag down taxis at inappropriate places, but must use marked off areas to do so.
