Spray away for cancer

WATERFALL CITY - An international construction company brought cancer awareness to their staff by hosting a Cansa spray/shavathon event at their premises.

This year marks Cansa’s 12th shavathon year and the event has become one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause, namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one’s hair is a common side effect of cancer therapy, so shaving one’s head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors.

However, for those who do not want to shave their heads, a colour spray option and ‘bail out’ option have also become popular at the event. The spray option includes colourful streaks and stencils being sprayed onto one’s hair and the ‘bail out’ option only requires a R50 donation. Group Five held their spray/shavathon event at their premises in Waterfall City and set up a fully-equipped area for staff to come through, make a donation and get their hair sprayed or shaved.

By bringing the event to their staff, Group Five allowed employees to show their support of the initiative and stand together to raise awareness of cancer.

The company also played host to Forever Changed ambassador and singing prodigy Shae Webb (14).

Singing prodigy and Forever Changed ambassador, Shae Webb explains why everyone should get their hair shaved or sprayed for Cansa:

The Forever Changed campaign focuses on cancer prevention, early detection, patient rights, doctor/patient negligence and messages of hope to cancer warriors and the public.
