Hair today, gone tomorrow

NORSCOT – A group of friends from Fourways and surrounds decided to stand together in solidarity against cancer and boldly went bald for the cause.

Consisting of 14 women from different walks of life, the group met on the morning of 27 February at the home of event organiser, Tina Traill, for coffee, fresh blueberry muffins and a Cansa Shavathon with a difference.

What started as a dare – Traill’s husband, Ian, promised to build her a kitchen cupboard if she promised to shave her hair off as he thought it would look beautiful – snowballed when numerous friends said they would do the same to help raise funds for Cansa.

“That’s when the Hairs Angels Project was born and our group is aiming to raise R50 000 for the charity,” said Traill.

“We want to prove that women can look beautiful without hair.”

The brave women, including Traill, who had all their hair shaved off were Carmen Barrington, Wendy Lester, Nicole Lester, Lyn Morgan-Leisure, Beryl Acar, Hazel Njitie, Nthabiseng Leshwedi, Johannie Ballack, Petro le Roux, Sonja Marx, Genevive Williams, Liz Levendig Botha and Sagree Moodley. A few of their male counterparts and family had their heads shaven too.

Cansa Care Centre head office representative, Lucy Balona expressed her gratitude for the women’s efforts. “I think it’s amazing because they are genuinely doing it for someone close to them who is either battling with cancer at the moment, or in memory of someone who has died because of the disease.

“Seeing the involvement and enthusiasm among these ladies is truly inspiring. For us at Cansa this is very exciting.”

After a long day of shaving, treats and make-up, the ladies went to a gala dinner sponsored by Kong Restaurant in Cedar Square, which also raised funds for the project.

Hairs Angel Project and Cansa would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all those involved in making the day a roaring success.
