Infamous road is rough on motorists

CRAIGAVON - So motorists and an uneven road surface are contributing to the high accident rate on Campbell Road in Craigavon.

Residents report that Campbell Road is a hot spot for speeding and many residents believe there should be more speed bumps on the road. The most recent accident on this road was when a biker landed on a barbed wire fence after being thrown off his bike on 25 February.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane said speeding is a problem experienced in many parts of the city. “Drivers are breaking the rules of the road on a daily basis and we know it,” he said.

Mafokwane said the community’s request for speed bumps has been escalated to the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s planning department for assistance. “My personal view is that change of behaviour of motorists will go a long way to reduce death on our roads and will contribute to our road safety,” he said. “Traffic calming measures should complement as an additional relief to already-disciplined drivers.”

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the public can report specific roads where reckless driving occurs to Sipho Dlepu, Metro police director of operations, by e-mailing siphod@joburg.org.za. “Because all traffic laws are classified as third schedule offences in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act, an officer in uniform has to witness a traffic offence before an offender can be arrested or fined,” he added.

Another reason for the numerous accidents on Campbell Road could be the uneven road surface on which cars have to drive. According to Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the agency, patching work was done on Campbell Road on 12 February.

“The road was originally intended to carry light traffic, however due to developments in the area, traffic has significantly increased, including heavy duty vehicles, and this has impacted the surface of the road,” she said. Peters-Scheepers said preventative maintenance would continue, however rehabilitation of the road is also necessary and the agency would keep the public informed about the time frames to be expected.\
